The Motorola Symbol LS4208 barcode scanner indicates status by issuing different buzzer sequences and modes. The following is a definition of the beeping sequence that is sent during normal scanning and when programming a barcode scanner.

I. The standard use:
1) Low/medium/high beep: Power on.
2) Short and high beep: The bar code symbol is decoded (if the decoding buzzer is enabled).
3) 4 long and low beeps: A transmission error is detected in the scanned symbol. The data is ignored. This happens if the barcode scanner is not configured correctly. Please check the option settings.
4) 5-low beep: conversion or format error.
5) Low/High/Low beep: ADF transmission error.
6) High/High/High/Low Beep: RS-232 received an error.

II. The parameter menu scans:
1) Short and high beep: Scan the correct entry or perform the correct menu sequence.
2) Low/high beep: Input error, scanned wrong barcode or "cancel", wrong entry, wrong barcode programming sequence; still staying in programming mode.
3) High/low beep: Keyboard parameters are selected. Please use the barcode keyboard input values.
4) High/Low/High/Low Beep: The program was successfully exited and the parameter settings were changed.
5) Low/High/Low/High Beep: Exceeded the host parameter storage space.

III. Code39 buffer
1) High/low beep: The new Code39 data has been entered into the buffer.
2) 3 long and high beeps: Code39 buffer is full.
3) Low/High/Low Beep: The Code39 buffer has been erased, or an attempt was made to clear or transfer an empty buffer.
4) Low/High Beep: Successfully transmitted buffered data.

IV. Specific to the host
USB only
1) 4 short and high beeps: The barcode scanner has not completed initialization. Please wait a few seconds before scanning.
2) After scanning the USB device type, the scanner will beep. Communication with the bus must be established before the scanner can operate at the highest power level.
3) The buzzer is turned on multiple times. The USB bus may put the barcode scanner in a state of multiple cycles of power-on and power-off. This situation is normal and usually occurs when the host PC is cold-started.
Only for RS232
A short, high beep, received a <BEL> character, and enabled "Beep at <BEL>".
